Organizing for a Franklinton Sound Wall

ODOT determined in 2010 that Franklinton qualifies for a sound wall—yet our community remains nearly last on their priority list (FRA-70).

Right now, Franklinton is scheduled for what's called a Type 1 Noise Wall. This type of wall is built only when major highway construction occurs. For our area (I-70 and SR315 corridors), the next big highway project isn't scheduled to start until around 2035, meaning we might not see the sound wall completed until around 2045.

This means if we don't take action, our homes, schools, and public spaces will continue to be exposed to noise and pollution from the highways for another 20 years.

Living close to a highway isn't just inconvenient—excessive noise and air pollution have proven impacts on health and quality of life. But if you live near I-70 or SR315, you likely already experience this every day.

How Can We Take Action?

We can apply for a Type 2 Noise Wall. Unlike other types, a Type 2 wall doesn't need to wait for a highway construction project—it can be built sooner. These walls are specifically intended for neighborhoods established before the highway was built, just like ours.

To apply for a Type 2 Noise Wall, we must submit a community-supported application. This involves collecting signatures from residents to show our unified support.

Here's our action plan for Spring 2025:

  • Complete and submit ODOT’s Type 2 Noise Wall application by the end of April.

  • Canvass the neighborhood to gather signatures from residents for ODOT’s Type 2 Noise Wall application. Initial canvassing date: March 22nd, 10AM-1PM. See more details about canvassing below the form.

  • Secure backing from our local elected officials to elevate Franklinton's priority.

Canvassing Details:

ODOT requires signatures from residents who live within 500 feet of the highway to support our Type 2 Noise Wall application.

If you live within the shaded area on this map, your signature is crucial to our application. We'll be canvassing door-to-door on March 22nd, from 10 AM to 1 PM. If you're unable to meet during that time but still wish to sign, please fill out the contact form above, and we'll arrange a convenient time to visit you.

If you live outside the 500-foot range but would still like to volunteer with canvassing efforts or contribute in other ways, please let us know through the contact form above.
